Get Away Hide Away – Horse Lorries – Norfolk

About

‘Get Away Hide Away’ is a small family-built and run glamping site tucked away in the beautiful Norfolk countryside in the small hamlet of Elsing. We have lovingly rescued and converted two wooden horse lorries into cosy hideaways for couples and families to enjoy in their natural surroundings.

Each unit comes completed with own unique and quirky private composting toilet and shower, plenty of private outside space with a large firepit/BBQ decking and seating area.

In any one day you could see deer tracking, all sorts of bees and butterflies. Often many birds of prey such as red kites buzzards and owls can be seen hunting. If you listen carefully you can sometimes hear the clan of badgers as the venture outside their sett at night.

There are two lorries to choose from Dixie and Douglas. Please see below discription of first Dixie followed by Douglas

DIXIE

Dixie is a repurposed horse lorry with lots of character and surprises hidden on her many levels. Set within its own half acre wildflower meadow with perfect views of the thriving and constantly evolving wildlife.

Set to one side of the lorry is a large luxury walk-in shower room. The space also plays host to the well maintained composting loo. The sink is crafted from a well worked slab of yew, acting as the table top for the stone sink held up with twisted ivy lengths. Set to the other side of the lorry is the large firepit complete with generous seating arrangement, ambient lighting complete with bbq tools and a purpose made griddle for the tractor rim fire pit.

Leading up to the lorry is a wide climb of steps to enter on to the first floor deck. This large decking area is ideal for spilling out from. Be it sharing a meal with others or simply lying back into a canvas deck chair and taking in all the space has to offer you senses. Another climb of steps takes you up to the top floor decking area. Towering four meters, above the surrounding landscape this deck is the perfect viewing platform to observe the site wildlife. Boasting a tin roof carefully designed to be placed to add maximum privacy. With subtle evening lighting the warmth from the inside bleeds through the stained glass on the secret hobbit door.

The inside space whilst off-grid, offers many home comforts that you might not expect. A large Belfast sink, housed in locally sourced milled and worked wood, provides warm suds for washing up. Whilst in the kitchen the fridge / freezer and four hob grill / oven makes for a well-stocked space for cooking. The inside dining option, provided by another hand crafted and worked yew slabt. Set to the rear of the lorry is a large sofa bed providing a comfortable and sociable space.

As the nights draw in and the weather turns cooler the wood burner adds instant comfort to the living space. Whilst the weather might keep you from sitting around the firepit it won’t keep you indoors. Our top deck is also covered from the weathers worst elements via a pig arc shelter roof. To keep yourself dry you can also access this top deck from the internal steps and through the hobbit door.

Retirement to the king size top bed is accessed via the oak library ladder. With many lighting options controlled by the switch panel right of the internal climb to the hobbit door with coveniently placed USB sockets throughout. Integral high-quality blue-tooth sound system for those lazy lorry days.

DOUGLAS

A truly unique hand crafted living space can be found within this restored & converted 1967 Bedford horse lorry Douglas. Buried within the Norfolk wildlife, you’ll find the hidden off grid eco-friendly space. With 1/2 an acre of wildflower set outside the unit, the space is designed to be shared with nature – the perfect get away.

Just a few steps from the trucks rear door there is a private modern shower unit and a separate, comfortable, well maintained compost toilet. Both facilities boasting sky views (we wont spoil the surprise). Just in-front of the outdoor decking area is a sizeable fire pit, complete with a seating area and removable griddle – a perfect space for al fresco dinning.

Within the lorry kitchen area there is a 4-hob cooker grill, kitchen sink and work top. In this rustic setting cooking is a different experience and some of our guests have even proved baking is possible. The repurposed loading ramp decking area then provides the perfect setting for eating under the moonlit sky or taking shade under the boat sail from the sun. The French doors can be pushed wide open to extend the floor space to the loading ramp decking area, with steps leading to the fire pit. When the sun goes in, power from the sun’s rays throughout the day is stored in the battery bank and recycled back around the site for the many subtle
lighting options, USB charging and pumping water.

As the weather turns cooler, the wood burner can transform the lorry from a summer retreat into a cosy romantic seasonal get away. The woodburner gets the truck toasty in no time and, with the views changing with the seasons it’s the perfect viewing spot for wildlife.

Tucked away above the cab is a cosy super king size bed, once you’re up there it’s hard to want to get down. Underneath there is a small bed tucked away, suitable for a child or small adult. The sofa bench seat can make another cosy sleeping area (you’ll need to provide your own bedding if using the sofa bench). You can even take to the wheel and explore the restored drivers cab. A perfect place to note wildlife. Butterflies, roe deer, hare, badgers, hedge-hog, buzzard, red kite will all often be seen – Sometimes all just in one afternoon.
