About

Sarah and Charlie Smith welcome you to the Yurt at Midland Farm.

We offer high quality accommodation comprising of our 19′ yurt, which comes complete with its own private kitchen/diner and bathroom in the adjoining shepherds hut.

They are beautifully finished with all the luxuries any self-respecting glamper could desire.

The Yurt and shepherds hut are for your exclusive use, you don’t share the site with any other holiday makers, so your privacy is guaranteed.

The yurt is spacious (19 ft diameter) and sleeps two adults in an antique French double bed, and comfortably accommodates a further two people in 2 singles.

It is a genuine Mongolian yurt with proper felt lining to keep you cool in summer and warm on chilly nights.

It has its own wood burning stove, and you can cook al fresco on the barbecue in the woodland area.

We provide you with all the bed linen, towels, pillows, etc, so all you need to bring is yourselves.

The shepherds hut provides guests with their own private fully equipped kitchen with fridge and cooker, and your own bathroom facilities, including hot shower and wc.

Kids can collect eggs for breakfast, help with the ponies and go for rides.

You can just take it easy or work up an appetite on the Brecon Beacons, or kayaking on the Wye.

We are spoilt for good pubs and restaurants – see our web site for some personal recommendations.

The gorgeous gardens that surround Midland Farm have been featured on the cover of the Royal Horticultural Society magazine, and are open to the public a couple of times a year. We will be happy to show you round.

Sarah’s small plant nursery, the sheep, horses, free-range chickens, and Walter the duck together bring Midland Farm to life and all add to the atmosphere.

But far away from it all, you’ll feel deliciously secluded here.

THINGS TO DO
There are no shortage of things to do nearby, the Brecon Beacons, excellent restaurants, pony rides, kayaking, Hay-on-Wye. Here are some of our personal favourites:

EATING OUT

The Tram
The Tram at Eardisley is excellent value with great food and a friendly wellcome. It has excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, and we agree ! Best to call first, closed on Mondays. Enjoy the Butty Bach.

The Stagg at Titley
The Stagg Inn at Titley was the first pub in England to gain a Michelin star. Its only 15 mins drive from Midland Farm, and is a great evening destination.

The Griffin
Just the other side of Hay is The Griffin at Felin Fach. Cath Urquhart, Travel Editor, The Times said “You know there’s something special about the place the minute you crest the hill.”

The Mill Race
Further afield a good destination for a day out is Simmonds Yat and lunch awaits at The Mill Race at Walford, Gastro Pub Of the Year in 2009.

SOME FRESH AIR
The Cats BackYou can see the ridge of Crib-y-Garth – better known as the Cat’s Back – form our yurt, so probably no better place to take a stroll.

It’s gentle progress as you follow it north/north-west, joining Offa’s Dyke path near Hay Bluff.

After taking in the truly magnificent views, it’s downhill all the way, following a “green lane” path which just happens to pass a charming country pub called The Bull at Craswall – well worth a stop over – before making your way back to the car.

Herefordshire has plenty to offer anyone keen on some fresh air. There are more miles of public footpath in Herefordshire than roads.

PONY RIDES at MIDLAND FARM
We have two ponies, Sam and Frodo. Sam is the smaller (12 hands) of the two and we can take children out on lead rein with Sam, which is a great way to experience riding in the countryside. We charge £12 for a lead rein session – length taylored to your preference / age, but usually between 40 mins and an hour.

KAYAKING AND CANOING ON THE WYE
One of the great attractions for many visitors to the area. There are several companies that hire kayaks or canoes and also offer lessons and trip out for the inexperienced family.
A wonderful day out for lovers of wildlife too, as the Wye is home to many species of birds and mammals including otters.

PONY TREKKING
A wonderful way of exploring this lovely countryside. There are many trecking centres in and around this area that cater for riders of all levels of ability. We like Brwyngwyn Riding Centre tye best, at 1200 feet above Hay on Wye it has the best hacking.

HEREFORD
The Cathedral: An imposing building dating back to saxon times, home to the medieval ‘Mappa Mundi’ (map of the world)

Shopping: A host of shops to suit everyone. The most exclusive shops to be found in Church Lane which leads to the Cathedral.

The Courtyard: Herefords centre for The Arts. Film, plays, panto, exhibitions, good place for a coffe, check out their website to see whats going on.

WELSH MARKET TOWNS
We are on the Welsh borders, so why not make a foray across to some of its best market towns, many just half an hour away.

Brecon: hosts the 24th Regiment of Foot’s museum, recounting the 48 hours of its cataclysmic defeat at Isandlwana and the subsequent miraculous ‘victory’ at Rorke’s Drift.

Hay-on-Wye is famous for its book shops and of course the Hay Festival, and is a good launch pad for a trek up the Black Mountains onto Hay Bluff.

And Abergavenny, Monmouth and Crickhowell are all within shooting distance, and good for an hour or two of pottering.
